Illustration of a naval leadsman by Charles Joseph Staniland

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Illustration of a naval leadsman during the age of sail by Charles Joseph Staniland. Leadsmen used lines weighted with lead to check the depth of water beneath ships. The term 'swinging the lead', meaning shirking duty, is from the practice of lazy mariners who skimped on the task, swinging the lead in the air and calling out a fictitious depth.
