Summary[edit]

Description
English: An illustration from the Encyclopaedia Biblica, a 1903 publication which is now in the public domain.

Fig. 3 for article "Pottery".

Image of pottery in Israel and Judah during the period 1000-500 B.C. The scale is one tenth of actual size in the printed Encyclopaedia Biblica. In this digital version of the image, the scale is roughly double - one fifth of actual size - due to scanning/dpi issues.

Images ultimately originate in Flinders Petrie's archaeological work Tell el-Hesy

  • Pot 1 corresponds to Petrie's image 20 (it contains an owners mark - X [aleph])
  • Pot 2 corresponds to Petrie's image 192
  • Pot 3 corresponds to Petrie's image 202
  • Pot 4 corresponds to Petrie's image 187
  • Pot 5 corresponds to Petrie's image 198
  • Pot 6 corresponds to Petrie's image 218
  • Pot 7 corresponds to Petrie's image 219
These shapes of pot were often made by a potter's wheel, and similar shapes of pot were made in Cyprus and Carthage during the same period.
