Summary[edit]
DescriptionByzantine church in Nahariya FEB2023.jpg |
English: In 1964 a huge mosaic floor was accidentally discovered which turned out to be the remains of a church.
The site is built as a basilica with three apse and two avenues of columns that divide the church into three parts and two galleries. The church was built in the early 6th century as a central Episcopal church throughout the Western Galilee between Tzur and Acre. The mosaic floor includes a series of 85 medallions depicting animals, plants and human figures from the daily lives of the locals. The church was apparently destroyed in 614 by the invasion of the Sassanid Persians and from 1972 to 1974 revealed by archeological excavations |
