DescriptionBywell St. Andrew - hatchment - geograph.org.uk - 1573519.jpg |
English: St Andrew's Church, Bywell, Northumberland, hatchment, dexter/husband's half black, for the funeral of Charles Bacon (1760-1830) (formerly "Charles Bacon Forster"), of Styford (near Bywell), who married Dorothy Grey (1761-1836), a daughter of Marmaduke Grey I of Kyloe and sister and heiress of Marmaduke Grey II of Kyloe. Arms: Ermine, a wild boar passant azure bristled armed and unguled or langued gules on a chief of the third two mullets of the fourth (Bacon of "Stewart Pile" (w:Staward Peel in the parish of Haydon), Northumberland; (Here the chief is seemingly shown azure and the mullets or, so the correct blazon would be: Ermine, a wild boar passant azure bristled armed and unguled or langued gules on a chief of the second two mullets of the third - the two mullets on a chief being a reference to the arms of the Bacon baronets of Suffolk, premier baronets of England); impaling Gules, a lion rampant a bordure engrailed argent (Grey of Howick, Northumberland (Earl Grey)). "Staward Manor House" in the parish of Haydon, Northumberland, contains initials on a lintel of George Bacon and his wife Cecilia Robson dated 1668 (see listed building text[1]), ancestor of Charles Bacon Forster (1760-1830)) and Newton Cap, County Durham. (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.38). Charles Bacon Forster (1760-1830) of Adderstone Hall, was born at Newton Cap, third son of John William Bacon (1733-1767) of Staward, Styford (near Bywell) and Newton Cap, High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1763 (who in 1757 adopted the surname of Forster (of w:Adderstone Hall, near Lucker, Northumberland)), at the time of his marriage), by his wife Sarah Garth, daughter of Joseph Garth and sister of Edward Turnour Garth, Earl of Winterton. Charles Bacon Forster dropped the surname Foster. He served in the 2nd Regiment of Foot, and inherited the estates of Staward and Styford from his nephew William Bacon. He married Dorothy Grey (1761-1836), a daughter of Marmaduke Grey I of Kyloe and sister and heiress of Marmaduke Grey II of Kyloe. (Source: "Bacon (now Bacon-Grey) of Staward, Styford, etc.," in A history of Northumberland, issued under the direction of the Northumberland county history committee by Northumberland county history committee, Vol VI, 1893, p.235 (A continuation of John Hodgson's A history of Northumberland, 1820-58)[2][3]). The estate of Styford was purchased in 1708 by John Bacon (d.1736), High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1693, 2nd son of George Bacon and his wife Cecilia Robson (fl.1668) of Staward Manor House, Haydon. |
