empty-handed Ihad, according to general instructions received, taken theopportunity of purchasing a number of objects which weneeded in London to fill up gaps in the National Collec-tion ;^ that I had also, with the consent of the Trustees,purchased a small collection of Egyptian antiquities forCambridge University ; and that all these, together withthe antiquities which had been handed over to me bythe British military authorities up the river, had alreadybeen despatched. Without heeding these remarks, Sir E.Baring then went on to say that he had heard only theday before that I had taken from a dealer a most valuableobject. According to what his informant told him thisobject was a most precious thing, nothing less than abook formed of waxed wooden tablets, inscribed in Greekshorthand.
