Title
English: Businesses at Virginia St. and Western Ave., Seattle, May 19, 1909.
Description
English: Denny Regrade Neighborhood. Possibly looking northeast from Pike St.and Western Ave. Shows the Stewart House in the background at 86 Stewart St., and also, the J.O. Ladd store .

On verso of image: "5-19-09. 1900 Block Western Ave."
  • Subjects (LCTGM): Utility poles--Washington (State)--Seattle
  • Subjects (LCSH): Markets--Washington (State)--Seattle; Apartment houses--Washington (State)--Seattle; Dwellings--Washington (State)--Seattle; Carriages and carts--Washington (State)--Seattle; Western Avenue (Seattle, Wash.); Virginia Street (Seattle, Wash.); Denny Regrade (Seattle, Wash.)

Configuration of buildings is obviously different than today. See map at File:Seattle - map - Pike Place Market and vicinity 1920.jpg, which is 1920 but at least strongly suggestive. Stewart House, visible here, is still at the northeast corner of Pike Place & Stewart, although much remodeled. Going by the map, the street going down here is probably Armory Way, not Western Ave. It might be the present-day route of Western, though. On the map, note the thin rectangular group of buildings between Armory and Western just south of Virginia (number 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 on the map). That's presumably what we are looking at here. See File:Looking south on Western Ave from Virginia St, Seattle, Washington, May 19, 1909 (LEE 139).jpeg for further context (another photo from the same day).
