| Description |
For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. Original historic description: Wismar, St.Georg-Kirche Zentralbild Link 13.7.1970 Reise nach Wismar. Wismar-alte Hansestadt mit gotischen Kirchen, engen Gassen und anmutigen Giebelhäusern - heute mit Überseehafen, modernen Industrieanlagen und der zweitgrößten Werft der DDR. Es lohnt sich, diese typisch norddeutsche Stadt an der Ostsee zu besuchen, ihre unaufdringliche Schönheit zu bewundern und ihre Kontraste zu entdecken. Hoch über den Dächern der alten Stadt erhebt sich der Turm der Marienkirche. Bis zum April 1945 war diese älteste der drei gotischen Backsteinkirchen Wismars (alle erbaut im 13.- 15. Jahrhundert) eine der schönsten des Ostseegebiets. Dann wurde sie wie die St.Georg-Kirche ein Opfer der Bomben, so daß ihre Umfassungsmauern gesprengt werden mußten. Der Turm konnte jedoch als Wahrzeichen Wismars und seiner alten Kultur erhalten werden. |
