Zentralbild Schlegel Bö-Noa 17.7.1957 Marx-Engels-Denkmal in Karl-Marx-Stadt Ein Denkmal der Begründer des wissenschaftlichen Sozialismus Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels wurde am Vortage der Wahlen am 22. Juni 1957, vom 1. Sekretär des Zentralkomites der Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands, Walter Ulbricht, in Karl-Marx-Stadt enthüllt. Das Monument ist ein Geschenk des ZK der SED und der Regierung der DDR an die Bevölkerung der sächsischen Arbeitermetropole, die seit 1955 in Würdigung ihrer revolutionären Traditionen und der großen Leistungen ihrer Einwohner beim Aufbau des Sozialismus den Namen "Karl Marx" trägt. Das Denkmal wurde von dem Bildhauer Walter Howart geschaffen und in der Berliner Kunstgießerei Seiler und Sieber in Bronze gegossen. Der Standort der überlebensgroßen Statuen, der ersten ihrer Art in der Welt, ist der Schillerplatz an der Straße der Nationen gegenüber der Hochschule für Maschinenbau.
