Type.—U.S.N.M. No. 99511. D. 4817. Niigata Light, S. 29° E.,18 miles (lat. 38°12 N., long. 138°52 E.). In 61 fathoms. July 18,1906. Length 70 mm. ((nriXwTos, spotted.) Family MONACANTHIDAEGenus STEPHANOLEPIS Gill STEPHANOLEPIS RETROSPINIS, new species Figure 25 Depth 1%; head 3, width 2%. Snout V/s in head, tip in frontwell below level of eye or opposite upper part of gill opening; eye2% in head, 2 in snout, slightly greater than interorbital; mouthsmall, terminal; teeth little exposed, front pair in each jaw largest;interorbital 3% in head, convex. Gill opening 1% in eye.

Pelvic flap little developed, with feeble slender spines. Pelvicspine hinged, hind section freely movable, edges spinescent allaround. wProc. U. S. Nat. Mus., vol. 25, p. 748, fig. 2, 1903 (type locality: Off Kuikwazan inMatsushima Bay, Japan). NEW PHILIPPINE FISHES FOWLER 91 D. I—25, spine 1*4 in head, reaches second dorsal when depressed,with row of 5 recurved large spinules each side and directed down-ward, second dorsal height 2% in head; A. 28, fin height 4%; leastdepth of caudal peduncle 2%; caudal l^i, convex behind; pectoral 2,rays 10. Color in alcohol brown, little paler below eye and on under surfaceof body. On body below second dorsal base three diffuse dark grayblotches and 2 along base of anal. Iris gray white. Fins all paleto whitish. Type.—U.S.N.M. No. 108467. Cebu Island, Philippines. April 24,1929. Lt. H.
