vis micrometrique permettant d'ecarter le tube du microscope de son porte-objet et de mesurer ses petits deplacements ; comme le Duc de Chaulnes l'a fait pour mesurer l'indice de refraction d'un corps transparent en lame a faces paralleles et planes. Apres avoir saupoudre la surface interieure du tube d'une ma- tiere finement divisee, par exemple de poudre de lycopode, on le place horizontalement sur le porte-objet du microscope. On met d'abord au point la poussiere en C' et on note la lecture Uq sur la tete de la vis micrometrique; on souleve ensuite a l'aide de la vis le tube jusqu'â ce que la mise au point soit de nouveau par- faite sur la poussiere en B', et l'on note cette derniere lecture n^. La difference n^—Hq des deux lectures, donne le diametre du tube. — Cette derniere methode a l'avantage non seulement de per- mettre la mesure du diametre du tube, âl'endroit meme du menis- que, sans le couper, mais elle permet d'dtudier son calibrag-e dans toute sa longueur. — On peut aussi employer cette methode â la mesure du dia- metre int^rieur des tubes barometriques.
