BULETINUL SOCIETĂŢII DE SCIINŢE 505 marines ne convertissent-elles pas au moment de la reproduction asexuelle un anneau de leur corps en une tete complete avec tentacules, bouche, etc. ? Cette tete de neoformation se detache, avec Ies anneaux qiii suivent, de l'individu paternei pour mener une vie libre. Cliez Ies Coelenteres la force de reproduction des organes est tres vive; chacun connaît l'exemple de l'hydre coupee en morceaux et dont chacun de ceux-ci reforme un in- divida parfait. Un curieux exemple de reconstitution des organes nous est fourni par Ies Holothuries, ces Echinodermes qui lancent contre un en- nemi trop entreprenant, leur intestin avec accessoires. Et ces organes sont reformes au bout de peu de temps. Les etr^s tout a. fait inferieurs, Ies ProLOZoaires_, reduits a une seule cellule, ont recours dans leur reproduc- tion au fractionnement de l'individu ; chaque moitie sectionnee prend peu â peu tous les attributs du parent dont ii constituait pârtie integrante. Cette faculte poussee â un si haut degre et pour ainsi dire de plus en plus intense au fur et mesure que l'on dessend la serie animale, se trouve reduite chez les vertebres en general^ et surtout chez ceux â sang chaud. Ces derniers peuvent reformer des tissus leses tels que la peau, et encore ii ne faut pas que la piaie depasse une certaine superficie; ils peuvent en- core reconstituer certaines parties du systeme nerveux, mais un organe entier complexe, jamais. Parmi les vertebres ă sang froid, les reptiles four- nissent assez frequemment des exemples de parties du corps regenerees. Si certains lezards se fractionnent voloatairement la queue pour echapper â leur ennemi, ils ont aussi la faculte de la faire repousser, mais jamais aussi longue que celle qui est remplacee. De meme si l'on fend longitu- dinalement l'extremite de la queue de nos lezards, les deux moities se completent individuellem.ent et l'on a ce qu'on appelle vulgairement un le- zard â deux queues; mais ii est plus juste de dire un lezard â queue bifide. Un phenomene analogue, mais interessant une tout autre pârtie du corps, fut observe dans le courant de cet automne chez un Acipenser ruthenus^
