[edit]DescriptionBuilding at 571 South Park Avenue, Buffalo, New York - 20210616.jpg |
English: As seen in June 2021. Though they are adjoined today, the two buildings that make up the parcel at 571 South Park Avenue (corner Hamburg Street) in the Old First Ward of Buffalo, New York were originally separate, built about a decade apart and representative of two distinct schools of architecture. The earlier of the two, at left, was built around 1872 and exemplifies the Italianate style with its segmentally-arched windows, the ornate brackets upholding the roof eaves underneath the front gable, and the subtle Classical influence that comes courtesy of the cast iron pilasters interspersed between what were once shop windows. Meanwhile, with the rough-textured, heavy-looking stone used in the window crowns and as trim, the right-hand portion of the building, the first record of which dates to 1882, represents Romanesque Revivalism. Matching the diversity of their architecture is that of the functions they have filled over their history: in the early years, the building on the left was home to Ryan Bros. Grocery (1872-1883) and Quinn & Donovan's saloon (beginning 1883), while the one on the right traditionally housed a grocery store (originally a location of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, later a branch of the local chain Danahy-Faxon) while the upper floors were home for many years known as Queen City Hall, meeting place of the Ancient Order of United Workmen lodge of the same name until 1910. Today, the building houses Girl Code Beauty Bar, Core Velocity yoga studio, the offices of the Great Lakes Brewing News, and a number of apartments. |
