e salts that it is usually sold andused. These are all white or nearlywhite substances, whose appearance isno more remarkable than common saltor baking powder. Radium is foundin nature in such exceedingly smallquantities that it is never visible evenwhen the material is examined withmicroscope. Ordinarily radium orecarries only a small fraction ofgrain per ton of material and radiumwill never be found in large quantitybecause it is formed by the deca.v ofuranium, a process which is wonder-fully slow, and radium itself decaysand changes to other elements so rap-idly that it is impossible for it to ac-cumulate naturally in visible masses..Minerals that carry radium, however, are fairly easy to determine. One ofthem, pitchblende, as generally found,is a black mineral about as heavy asordinary iron, but much softer. Theprincipal radium mineial, carnotite.has a bright canary-yellow color, andi.s generally p.>wd«ry. There are otherradium-be.irinu niiii.iiils of le.^s Im-portance. >.wr
