Summary[edit]
DescriptionBuilding 37, General Electric Research Laboratory, Schenectady, New York - 20220615.jpg |
English: An iconic presence in the cityscape of Schenectady, New York is Building 37 of the General Electric Research and Development Center, as seen on a June 2022 morning from an Amtrak train pulling out of the downtown station. Built in 1925 as an expansion of what the National Register of Historic Places describes as "the first true industrial research facility in the United States... the first institution to organize scientific research on a systematic basis", the building is perhaps best known for its iconic light-up sign, with letters standing ten feet tall and the famous GE monogram logo 36 feet in diameter. In 1975, along with the rest of the General Electric Research Laboratory, Building 37 was simultaneously added to the National Register of Historic Places and to the roster of National Historic Landmarks. |
