Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bryant Place Apartments, 334-346 Bryant Street, Buffalo, New York, February 2022. A contributing property to the NRHP-listed Elmwood West Historic District, this handsome apartment complex comprises 32 units divided between two buildings, each constructed in 1895 and boasting a Neoclassical architectural aesthetic. At first blush, the two buildings look extremely similar: four stories in height; shaped parapets with decorative brick corbelling underlining the flat roof; twin entrances framed by pint-sized Tuscan porticos. The fenestration schemes - and specifically the arrangement of the multistory, clapboard-sheathed bay windows on the façades - are what set the two buildings apart from each other. On the building at left, originally known as The Pembroke, the bays only extend two stories above the ground, with an unbroken row of flat-headed windows on the fourth floor and round-arched ones on the third with decorative reliefs in the tympanums; meanwhile, at right on what was once called The Haverford, all four stories contain bay windows, interspersed with the aforementioned flat-headed and round-arched windows in columns above the entrances.
