Summary[edit]
DescriptionBrookwood Cemetery - geograph.org.uk - 45777.jpg |
English: Brookwood Cemetery. Brookwood Cemetery was opened in 1854 by the London Necropolis Company. It was intended to relieve the pressure on London churchyards which were full to bursting. The company bought 2000 acres of Woking's common land from Lord Onslow, 500 of which was used for the cemetery. (The extension was never started and the town of Woking now occupies the other 1,500 acres). The cemetery was served by special trains which ran from the Necropolis Station on Westminster Bridge Road. At Brookwood they ran into the cemetery itself. |
