Title
Bronze Age Penannular loop or ring money (plan)
Description
English: Report to H M Coroner on find of potential Treasure from Radway, Warwickshire. 2005 T552

Small gold penannular ring with traces of decorative banding in close-set narrow stripes, which would originally have shown as bands of yellow and paler gold. The alternate stripes of softer metal are somewhat eroded and the banded effect is now difficult to see with the naked eye. The piece is worn, especially around the circumference. Closer inspection in the laboratory showed that the ring is solid, and has complex three-tone striping; this is analogous to a ring in the British Museum collection which formed part of a scientific study by Nigel Meeks (forthcoming, Jewellery Studies 11).

External diameter 13mm-12mm; breadth 4mm; thickness 3.5mm; weight 4.24 grams.

Identification The ring belongs to a well dated group of ornaments of the Late Bronze Age, circa 1150-750 BC.

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
