Title |
Bronze Age : Axe |
||
Description |
English: A complete Late Bronze Age socketed axehead dating from 1150 – 800 BC, possibly of the south-eastern type, Class A. The axe survives in a very good condition and much of the original surface still survives. The axehead has a dark reddish-brown patina. This axehead has two bulbous mouth mouldings. The mouth of the socket is complete and of square shape (internally) measuring 27mm x 23mm. The socket depth is approximately 87mm. Neither face has any form of decoration visible. Attached to one side of the axe is a small loop extending from the lower moulding. From the main body of the axe the loop extends outwards and has a rounded profile. The casting flash extends from the mouth to the blade tips and is slightly lipped, visible on both sides. The blade is much wider than the rest of the axe. The blade tips and cutting edge are slightly corroded. Vertical striations are present on the blade which is usually the result of grinding the blade to sharpen it. The cutting edge measures 60.6mm in width. Similar axeheads can be seen in Needham (1990), p28. |
