Summary[edit]

Description Published by P.G. Huardel & Co in 1899 this undivided back postcard was printed in Belgium. The artist is Hendrik or Henri Cassiers a Belgian watercolourist who also worked as a graphic artist and designed posters for shipping companies. The sandwichmen are advertising a series of postcards published by Huardel and painted by Cassiers of London sights. This is Broad Sanctuary with the West front of Westminster Abbey in the background. The figure on the left is a "Blue coat or Blew coat Boy" who was a pupil at the Blue coat School in Caxton Street, Westminster. The school was one of a number of charity schools set up to educate the poor boys of the parish in the three 'Rs'. It was founded in 1709 and paid for by a local brewer, the area surrounding the school is still called Brewer's Green. The boys wore a blue coat because the blue dye was the cheapest at the time. The school moved in 1899 but continued to be a secondary school until 1926. It became a Military store and the Girl Guides had it for some time, it then became a National Trust gift shop and in 2013 it became an up market Bridal Boutique.
