Summary[edit]

Description This photograph dates from the early 1870s and shows the buildings which were demolished to make way for the Royal Aquarium. The demolished houses fronted onto Princes Street which later became Storey's Gate. Amongst the premises demolished were a public house and a glove factory. In the background the west front of Westminster Abbey and the Victoria Tower emerge from the mist, the column dates from 1861 and commemorates the old boys of Westminster School who died during the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny.
