It lays from fix to eighteggs, of a dull yellowilh white color, marked withnum.bers of very fmall ferruginous fpecks; andtowards the fmaller end with fome blotches of thefame hue. Mixed Befides the common fpecies of black cock, M.Brijfon mentions a variety found in Scotland, underthe name of le coq de hruyere piquete, or fpottedblack cock. It differs from the common fort inbeing fpotted on the neck, bread, wings and thighswith red. This I fuppofe to have been a fpuriousbreed between this and the former fpecies, as thel^etrao Hybridus of Linnd^us is. I could not learnthat this mixed race was found at prefent in NorthBritaifj, perhaps becaufe the cock of the wood isnow become fo very rare. It is alfo found in Swe-defi^ and defcribed by Linn^us in his Faun.
