Retreat upon Mosul, by way of Bakubacut off, the Turkish 13th Corps would be obliged toretire from Kasr-i-Shirin over the difficult mountainroad to Kifri. The Turkish military organisationbased upon Bagdad had gone to pieces. While the move upon Bakuba was being made,another was taking place towards Feludja on theEuphrates. As a glance at the map will show, near toBagdad the two great rivers of Mesopotamia swervetogether, and the distance here separating them is notmore than twenty miles. Since to command them is tocommand the communications of the country, it wasevident that the occupation of Feludja was insistent.Nor can it be supposed that the enemy would notstrongly have opposed this move had he been in asituation to do so.
