DescriptionBritish North America Act, 1867.jpg |
English: "An Act of the Imperial Parliament for the Union of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and the Government Thereof; and for Purposes Connected Therewith."
Front page of a copy of the British North America Act, 1867 published in Ottawa, Canada. Enacted by the British Parliament, the statute is now known as The Constitution Act, 1867 (known informally as the BNA Act, and still known by its original name in United Kingdom records). A major part of Canada's Constitution, the Act established the Dominion of Canada by fusing the North American British colonies of the Province of Canada (the two subdivisions of the Province of Canada, Canada West and Canada East, were renamed Ontario and Quebec), the Province of New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. The Act also defines much of the operation of government in Canada, including its federal structure (including the division of powers between the provinces and the federal government), the House of Commons, the Senate, the justice system, and the taxation system. |
