Summary[edit]

Description
English: Bristol-bound train at Waverley Station, near to Edinburgh, Great Britain.

The train is bound for Bristol Temple Meads. Whenever I see a train like this one, I'm always taken aback by its narrowness. Whether or not it really comes down from the standard width of a Roman cart, the fact is that we could have had sturdier, safer trains if the railway companies had been sensible and adopted Brunel's broad gauge. Instead, after the 'battle of the gauges' in the 1840s, we inherited, thanks to Stephenson, the standard 4ft 8 1/2 inch gauge of wagonways on the British coalfields - the usual British cheapskate solution of never spending more than is absolutely necessary.
