Original caption
U.S. Engineer Office photograph of the Union Bridge. The bridge was a privately built covered wooden toll bridge on the Allegheny River at the Pittsburgh's Point. Built in 1874, it had an exceptionally low vertical clearance of only 30 feet. The bridge was torn down in 1907 at the request of the U.S. War Department and replaced by the North Side Point Bridge, which had a 70 foot vertical clearance above the river elevation.
