U.S. Engineer Office photograph of the Seventh Street Bridge, seen here connecting the City of Pittsburgh to Allegheny City across the Allegheny River. Designed by Austrian engineer Gustav Lindenthal and constructed in 1885, it was a complex suspension bridge using trusses to stabilize the double cables that held up the deck. The bridge was replaced in 1925-1926 by the present bridge, also a suspension design. In the background is the Sixth Street Bridge, the third bridge on the site, which was replaced by the fourth in 1925. The third bridge was floated downriver and reconstructed between Coraopolis and Neville Island.
