Summary[edit]

Description

U.S. Engineer Office photograph of the Monongahela Wharf looking toward the Smithfield Street Bridge. The Monongahela River separates the City of Pittsburgh from its South Side before joining the Allegheny River to form the Ohio at the city's westernmost point. Riverboats plying the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers docked there; today it is a parking lot. The Smithfield Street Bridge seen in the distance was designed as a variant of a rare configuration of the lenticular or Pauli truss by Gustave Lindenthal, and built in 1883. It was widened in 1890 and 1911 to accommodate a double lane for trolleys, shortly before this photograph was taken. The second bridge in the far distance is the Panhandle Bridge of the Port Authority of Allegheny County, a railroad bridge (still standing) serving the Light Rail line into the city, built by the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway in 1903. The large building on the bluff is the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station, built in 1877.
