Text Appearing Before Image:
re, on three-lego-ed stools, were seated six fearful-looking hags andsix handsome, stalwart young men, the man addressedas Denis, with the small table alongside him and theladle in his hand being evidently the Master of theEevels. Denis filled twelve mugs with the ladle fromthe bowl-shaped vessel and handed a measure round toeach of the company, reserving the last and largest mugfor himself, Now, gentlemen, said he, standing up and noddingto each of his five male friends, I have a toast to pro-pose : Health, wealth, and increase of magical powerto our fair friends (George thought he noticed himwinkino- at one of the men as he said this), and maythey each and all of them secure the renewal of theirlife leases and the extension of their licences onequitable terms ! To your feet. Champions ! The other five men rose, and holding their mugshigh over their heads, cried, Hip, hip, hurrah ! andthen they tossed off the boiling-hot fire-water as if itwere so much gruel, and resumed their seats.
Text Appearing After Image:
BRAYHARD. 43 Denis, and fellow Champions, said Madame Anas-tasia Kalyb, rising: on behalf of my sisters, Wilhel-mi na, Carolina, Adelina, Mariana, and Johanna, allowme to thank you most sincerely for your kind wishes, and for the sincere and inspiriting manner in whichyou have swallowed the toast. I am sorry I cannotrespond also in the name of our dear sister Hortensia, and I own I feel alarmed at her absence. I know sheburnt her broomstick a long while ago, but she alwayshad the seven-league sea-boots handy, and I think ifshe were in her ordinary health and spirits, if no un-foreseen or untoward accident had happened to her,she would, though she is S7Lch a stay-at-home, bepresent on this memorable occasion. It is of courseher wedding-day, but I am confident her worthyhusband—a Champion like yourselves—would notprevent her from paying us a friendly visit, and in factwould accompany her here on this, as I have saidbefore, momentous occasion, and if—-— Cut it short, old girl! said
