Boys Brigade parade through Toll Gavel, Beverley, c.1910 Neville Hobson was aged 22 when he founded the Beverley Company of the Brigade, a Church of England youth organisation. He had been asked to form a company of the Church Lads’ Brigade by the Church of England Men’s Society in February 1908. Enrolment for the Beverley Company (St. Mary and St. Nicholas) was on the 18th June 1908. There were 6 members on the first drill night. The drill hall was originally in St.Mary’s Boys School, Cross Street, Beverley. A new subsequent drill hall opened in George Street, and was opened on the 28 October 1909. In December 1912, a resolution was passed to purchase the three storied building at the corner of Wilbert Grove and George Street and adapt for the purposes of Headquarters for the company. Neville Hobson and 12 other boys joined up within weeks of the outbreak of the First World War. Captain Hobson returned and continued his role as Commanding Officer of the Brigade until his death in 1975. The Brigade became nationally known in 1979 as the Church Lads’ and Church Girls’ Brigade.
