Title |
Bovine bucket mount |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy bucket escutcheon or mount in the form of a bovine head. The head would be mostly likely positioned along the rim and would be vertical. Protruding and integral to the upper edge of the object is a semi-circular lug with a circular perforation or rivet hole for attachment. The outer edge of the attachment is decorated with a series of deliberate indentions.
The head of the bull is sub-rectangular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. Below the attachment each side of the object rises up forming two long horns. The horns curve backwards tapering to a rounded terminal where they meet. The horns are complete and are oval in cross-section. Below the horns the head curves inwards before flaring out in the form of a rounded and raised knop on each edge of the object forming the eyes of the bull. Below the eyes the sides again curve inwards before curving out slightly to form the nose. The nose is rectangular and flared slightly at each edge forming the nostrils. A horizontal groove runs along the vertical edge of the snout representing the mouth. The reverse of the object is hollow, with the edges forming a deep cell. The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition. Similar bovine bucket mounts have been recorded from a number of contexts on the PAS database and elsewhere. Iron Age parallels are noted from Ham Hill in Somerset and Dinorben in Clwyd (Megaw and Megaw, 1989: 223), as well as a possible example from Suffolk (SF-536544). Roman examples are noted from a number of locations including Caerleon in Wales (NMGW-DBBD23), Kenchester in Herefordshire (see WAW-1DA1F0), Layham in Suffolk (LYM 005), as well as numerous examples on the PAS database (for example WAW-342131, ESS-3806F3, SF-29BDD6, WMID-C96A57, SF5462). |
