Description
English: Nineteen Non-Commissioned Officers and other ranks of the Bournemouth Artillery Volunteers* at camp. Probably the band as there is a Band Sergeant 3rd from left, middle row, and another musician, bottom left. The white shoulder belts probably had music cases at the back.
  • Later 4th Hants Corps, then 1st Dorset RGA (Volunteers).

The Bournemouth Artillery Volunteers had a Drill Hall in Winton before they moved to a new home at Terrace Mount in the early 1870s. This included 8-10 stables with living accommodation above, and an armoury at the far end. They had a firing range on Hengistbury Head.

The photograph was taken by Walter Scott who did not come to Bournemouth until the end of the 1890s so this photograph must have been taken close to the turn of the century.
