Family: Burseraceae Distribution: Limited to South eastren part of Eastern ghats of India. Photographed at Velugonda hills of Nellore district.The tree grows in dry rock crevices. 10 m tall trees.Bark papery, ash colored. Leaves crowded at the apical part of branches. During the flowering season the tree sheds off all the leaves. Leaves 10-20 cm, leaf lets opposite, odd numbered, oblong, ovate, entire. Flowers pinkish white, in lax panicles, panicle 15-30cm long, flowers 4-6mm across, Calyx and corolla 5 lobed, disk red, stamens 10 inserted in the disk, drupes trigonous. The stem yields yellowish resin when it is wounded.The resin is fragrant and has potential medicinal and commercial value, it s known as "Guggilam"in Telugu. |
