Embroidery viola's - embroidered on the sewing machine

Summary[edit]

Description

English: Embroidery by Nelina Gesina Elisabeth Smid (1879-1963). Embroidered on an ordinary sewing machine. Nelina Smid was employed by Singer's in Groningen (the Netherlands) from around 1898 until her marriage in 1904 (25 years old) as teacher embroidering on the sewing machine. She taught throughout the country.

This work shows purple viola's next to a vase with water. It is signed in the left low corner: N. Smid.

In 1898 her name was in the newspaper the 'Provinciale Drentsche en Asser Courant', as miss N.G.E. Smid, because an embroidery of hers, of the Dutch coat of arms (embroidered in silk), was displayed in Groningen.
