This was the first inaugural ball, whichhas since become one of the features of in-auguration festivities, and the sale of ticketsis largely relied upon to pay the expenses ofthe decorations, illuminations, etc., neces-sary to give the city a gala appearance. Themoney required for this purpose is advancedby public-spirited citizens and repaid fromthe sale of ball tickets, at from $5.00 to$10.00 each, sites for spectators stands, etc.In case of a deficit these advances would beassessed pro rata, but there is usually a sur-plus which is turned over to charity, as about15,000 people attend. There is so little dancing that the nameball appears to be a misnomer, but thescene is a brilliant one. The newly installedPresident and his wife attend, diplomats andarmy and navy officers of all ranks appear infull uniform, governors and statesmen of THE INAUGURATION OF A PRESIDENT
