Benjamin Harrisonwere assailed by a deluge of rain. Grantand Cleveland, each on their second inau-guration, were greeted by veritable bliz-zards—snow, tragic cold and high winds.Washingtons first inauguration was, ofcourse, an entire novelty. All the way fromMount Vernon to New York his progresswas a continuous ovation. Washington onthe occasion wore a new suit of browncloth, garnished with embossed brass but-tons bearing the effigy of the Americaneagle. His trousers were knickerbockers,the buckles on his shoes were of silver, athis side hung his sword in a shagreensheath, and his hair was powdered and tiedin a black silk bag at the back of his head.He was sworn in by Chancellor Livingston,standing on the balcony of Federal Hall,looking out on Broad street. Immediately agreat shout went up from the crowd out-side, somewhat after the style in vogue inmonarchical countries, Long live GeorgeWashington, President of the United States. 12 STRIKING INCIDENTS OF PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATIONS.

THE PRESIDENT EN ROUTE FROM W1IITK HOUSE TO CAPITOL. The inaugural ball was postponed untilMay 7 in order that Mrs. Washington, whohad remained at Mount Vernon, could parti-cipate in it. When it finally was held boththe President and his lady attended anddanced in the cotillon and minuet. At his second inauguration, in Philadel-phia. Washington was conveyed to Inde-pendence Hall, the scene of the ceremonies,in a splendid coach drawn by six whitehorses. He wore a suit of rich black vel-vet, the knee breeches being ornamentedwith diamond buckles. Thomas Jefferson,his Secretary of State, cut a very promi-nent figure, arrayed gorgeously in a sky-blue coat, decorated with big basket but-tons, vest and knee breeches of bright crim-son, and enormous silver buckles on hisshoes. •lohn Adams inauguration occurred alsoin Independence Hall, Philadelphia.
