er-production of the lighter Oklahoma oils is forcing the Gulfoils more and more to fuel uses. The navies of the worldcry out for fuel oil. The Texas railroads are using severalmillions of barrels of fuel oil annually, oil-burning loco-motives, no cinders, being a much-used advertisement ofthe railroads. A Texan, A. M. McAfee, has won both fameand fortune by discovering an economical chemical processfor refining the Gulf oils. As the production of Gulf oil fell off the production oflighter, higher grade oils in north Texas increased. To theCorsicana and Powell fields were added, in 1904, the smallPetrolia field near Henrietta, in Clay County, the smallMarion field in 1910, the great Electra field in 1911. Oilwas first struck at Electra in 1900 while boring for water.Several barrels were obtained at 150 feet. A companybegan boring for oil in August, 1909, but nothing startlinghappened until Mr. T. Waggoner, who owned the land, put down a deep well that struck oil in profitable quantity.
