Title
Bonnet, woman's
Object type Classification: NM3.2135
Description
English: Woman's bonnet with main body in black, plain weave (lustrous linen), covered in a very loosely woven thick linen thread with straw ribbon interwoven making a uniformed looping effect; black silk velvet trim to the front, ruched at the top, over which is pinned a very loosely woven straw ribbon interwoven with chenille covered wire; top (right proper), trim of gathered black silk satin; top (left proper), black velvet ribbon bow, partially covered with different types of artificial leaves; five green-crimson-white pressed fabric leaves and three beige-green silk fabric leaves with black covered wire backing and two clusters of matt black sequins; large black silk velvet ribbon bow at lower centre back held in place by two hat pins on the RHS; black silk velvet ribbon tie attached to each side of bonnet; lined with black silk gathered at back with ribbon drawstring. Probably worn by Catherine Hastie as an older woman. Stylistically it is from the 1870s-1880s, but she may have continued to wear a bonnet as an older woman for longer than was fashionable. (L.J)
