Description
English: Collotype, Divided back

This postcard actually shows a young Gohar Jan (right) and her mother Malka Jan, both famous dancers and singers. Gohar Jan was the first recorded Indian artist, by the Gramophone company in 1904. She can be heard on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gohar+jan)

This image was used earlier in F.M. Coleman's 1897 book Typical Pictures of Indian Natives (https://www.amazon.com/Typical-Pictures-Natives-Descriptive-Letterpress/dp/1371939357) Coleman was the Editor of the Times of India. The book can also be found on the Archive.org. (https://openlibrary.org/books/OL14046535M/Typical_pictures_of_Indian_natives)
