| Description |
English: Folio 66r from the w:en:Codex Mendoza. (1) On the left, Huiznahuatl ('Thorn Speech') appears either as judge or as senior constable to oversee the execution at the centre, where two constables have garrotted a rebellious provincial ruler (cacique); on the right, the victim’s wife and son wear slave collars. The remaining scenes on this and the following page depict the events which led to the execution: (2) (left) The cacique’s warriors, wearing quilted cotton armour, attack travelling Aztec merchants, whose discarded fan, above their load of merchandise, may imply an imperial mission; (right) two Aztec constables wearing ritual jackets deliver sentence to the cacique; their sandals imply a journey, and the footsteps below indicate their return. (3) (lower half of page) On the right, in an act of further provocation, subjects of the cacique shoot arrows at four Aztec ‘officers and ambassadors’ as they return home; each constable carries a distinctive fan.
