IN equipping a boat for a cruise,even in summer, it is always wellto remember that gales of windare not unusual even in July.I once knevv^ it to blow with spitefulferocity in the last week of thatmonth, and to disperse the AtlanticYacht Club squadron and drive them toseek shelter in various harbors of LongIsland Sound, between Black Rock andNew Haven. Out of the whole fleetonly two yachts reached their destina-tion. New London. One was the sloopAthlon^ Vice-Commodore E. B. Havens,on board of which I was a guest, andthe forty-footer Chispa. It was quitean exciting and hard thrash to wind-ward in the teeth of an easterly gale,but we got there. Had not the twoyachts mentioned been properly pre-pared for such an exigency, they alsowould have been forced to bear up andrun for some land-locked :$a v^en in whichto linger until the wind had blown itselfout.
