Summary[edit]

Description
English: These stained glass windows from the eastern side of the Blumeneck Family Chapel in the Freiburg Minster date to 1882-83 and were made in the Freiburg workshop of Heinrich Helmle (1829-1909) and Albert Merzweiler (1844-1906) with the assistance of the stained glass artist Eugen Börner and the painter Hugo Huber. They are copies of the original panes which are now in the Augustinermuseum of Freiburg and were presumably designed ca. 1517 by Hans Baldung Grien.

On the left-hand side, Mary and John stand before the large cross on which Jesus hangs with a pale body and a waving loincloth. Mary is wrapped in a light cloak. John stands with his back to the viewer and gazes at Jesus with folded hands. Behind the mountain ridge in the back is a finely drawn seascape with ships, houses, and mountain ranges.
The right-hand side shows a hilly, fenced garden in which the resurrected Christ appears to Mary Magdalene as a gardener on Easter morning. A landscape with houses, lakes, and a blue mountain range is depicted behind the two figures. Magdalene kneels in worship, her long, blonde hair covering her back to the hips. Before her is her attribute, a golden jar of anointing oil or salve. Beneath a brilliant red cloak with a golden clasp, the naked body of Jesus is covered only with a loincloth and shows the stigmata. His left hand is propped on a spade, and his right hand is extended to ward her Magdalene:

"Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." (John 20:15-17).

Die Originale, die um 1517 vermutlich von Hans Baldung Grien entworfen wurden, befinden sich heute im dortigen Augustinermuseum.
