To say that Tiger was eager and expectant isto underrate that game little sports intelligence andhis power to catch moods from his master. At firsthe sat on the rocks, with every shining tooth in hishead a finished cameo of expectant delight, and hewatched the lines shaking in the eddies as he wouldwatch a hole for a rat, or another dog for a fight.When the line started cutting through the water andthe musical hum of the reel rose, Tiger knew as well ashis master just what was happening. At the Breaks. To the Breaks of Sandy We all knew plainly that that was what he said. Give him plenty of line. Dont strike yet—not yet.Dont you know that hes just running for a rock?Now hes swallowing the minnow—head first. Offhe goes again—nows your time, man, now—^wow! When the strike came and the line got taut and therod bent, Tiger would begin to leap and bark at thewaters edge. As Dan reeled in and the fish wouldflash into the air, Tiger would get frantic. When hismaster played a bass and the fish cut darting circlesforward and back, with the tip of the rod as a centrefor geometrical evolutions, Tiger would have sprunginto the water, if he had not known better. Andwhen the bass was on the rocks. Tiger sprang for himand brought him to his master, avoiding the hook asa wary lad will look out for the sharp horns of a mud-cat.
