Summary[edit]
DescriptionBlast Beach, view toward Nose's Point - geograph.org.uk - 1539182.jpg |
English: Blast Beach, view toward Nose's Point The 'Turning the Tide' project has left a beach now largely cleaned of its detritus from decades of dumping and neglect. The sea continues to do its bit.
The step along the beach shows where colliery waste is being eroded from the artificial beach level by the tides. The bank of black ash near to Noses's Point shows how dumping of mine waste in that area reaches most of the way to the cliff top. Fishermen down here would kick piles of ash, spontaneous combustion creating fires to keep them warm. The beach is dark from coal fragments and iron pyrites. Marine life has now largely returned to the coastline as much of the lighter fragments which used to choke the water have been taken by the sea. On the right, the caves can be seen in the narrow, magnesian limestone headland south of Nose's Point 1538452 |
