The rights to this image are shared between the Crown, the family of the Duke of Cambridge and, it is believed, the assistant registrar. The right to use the layout provided by the birth certificate is owned by the Crown and is covered by the British Open Government Licence (See below). The right to use the personal data on the form is covered by the Data Protection Act 1998 - Schedule II, paragraph 1 which states that data may be processed in cases where "The data subject has given his consent to the processing". The office of the Duke of Cambridge and his family implicitly gave permission for the personal data contained on the certificate to be publicised by publishing the certificate on Twitter. The assistant registrar's signature has been blanked out so as not to infringe their rights.
