Range in North Carolina.—Eastern portion of the State, mainly east and soutli of a hne drawnfrom Norfolk, Va., to Raleigh, and thence to Charlotte. The Red-cockaclcd Woodpecker, intermediate in size between the Hairy andDowny Woodpeckers, is an abundant Ijird in the pine woods of the Lower Australregion in this State. So far it has been noted only in Bertie, Carteret, Craven,Brunswick, Bladen, Moore, New Hanover, Currituck, and Wake counties. In thelast named comity it seems to be merely a straggler, only four specimen.s havingbeen observed in thirty years of observation. A. L. Feild reports it also fromChapel Hill, in March and April, 1909. This species, when about to nest, excavates a hole in a living pine tree. Allaround the tree for two or three feet above the entrance, and for a distance fullyas great beneath it, the birds
