dden the horn of doom, burn up the world, when there shall riseand when this sounds the great Ash will a new world, a better world, with a newcrack and bend, the sea will give up its Ash Tree in the center. Evelyn Singer. LITTLE BROTHERS OF THE AIR. Gone—A voice, from the anthem of dawn!So golden a voice and so gay,So blithe oer the birth of the day!Ah! who would be fain to adornHerself—by thus wronging the morn? Lost—A wing, that, undipped, should have crossedThe sky, in free joyance of flight,To soar in the blue out of sight!Amid all the trophies of earth-To make, in the Heavens, such dearth! Stilled—A throbbing heart, spring would have thrilled,Though slight, with what ecstasy strong.Of mating and nesting and song!Yet she of the warm human heart,Hath herein borne unwitting part! Slain! No softlier word doth remain—A bird of too glowing a crest—Too brilliant a bloom on its breast!Alas! doth she dream what is done,In wake of her will, neath the sun? —Edith Hope Kinney iw
Text Appearing After Image:
THE AMERICAN WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. (Anser albifrons gavibeli.) The American White-fronted Goosehas an extensive range which includesNorth America, though it is rare on theAtlantic coast. In the interior and onthe Pacific slope it is common, exceptingduring the nesting season, for it breedsonly in the Far North. This specieswinters in the United States, southwardto Mexico and Cuba. As a winter resi-dent it is much more abundant on theGreat Plains and westward to the Pa-cific coast. In the Mississippi Valleyand eastward, it is more common as amigrant, and in most localities of thisregion it is rare in winter. In Illinoisit appears in its fall migrations duringOctober or early in November, and inthe spring it returns during March andApril. In those localities where it onlyappears as a migrant, its peculiar andrapidly repeated notes Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, may well remind one of thewords of Celia Thaxter in her poemWild Geese: Hark, what a clamor goes winging through the sky!Look, children
