or of a Spanishbotanist. The specific name is fromthe Latin, meaning scarlet. Nearly allof the forty species are natives of Northand South America. The flowers are dull yellow in colorand are obscured by the rather largefloral leaves or bracts, which are brightscarlet—rarely bright yellow—in color.These conspicuous leaves are broadertoward the apex and usually aboutthree-cleft. By the novice they areusually mistaken for the flower, whichis hardly noticeable. The stem sel-dom exceeds a foot in height and bearsa number of leaves that are deeply cutin narrow segments. The bright colorof this plant has given it many localcommon names more or less descrip-tive. Prominent among these is theIndian paint brush. A pretty myth tells us that thepainted cup was originally yellow, butthat Venus, when lamenting the deathof Apollo, pressed a cluster of the blos-soms to her parched lips and drankthe dew from the flowers, the outerleaves of which have ever since re-tained the color of her lips. 92

It is thought thevineyards of southern Europe wouldbe injured, as they are dependent onthe dry winds that come across theMediterranean from the great desert.The rainfall in at least one-third of theinhabited parts of the globe would beaffected by this great change in theamount of water on the surface. Shipswould be able to sail to ports at thesouth of Morocco and Algiers wherenow are shifting sands and few people,and new cities would spring into beingfar to the south where the new coastline would be f
