English: The new fisheries management strategies developed through the establishment of the Lake Niassa Reserve, including community-designed policies to protect species during their spawning periods and ensure the use of appropriate nets that capture only mature fish, are already producing results. Some communities are reporting higher levels of artisanal fish capture after only one year of work, regularly reeling in fish that are up to 12 inches long and of a higher quality than the three to five inch fish that fine-meshed nets used to yield. Yet the benefits of the Reserve for fisheries production and food security are only just beginning to appear. As improved management techniques are put into practice, illegal fishing further controlled, and additional tourism infrastructure created, the benefits of the Reserve for community members can be expected to increase in tandem. USAID has worked in partnership with the government of Mozambique, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Coca-Cola Company to protect the species and natural habitats of the of the most biodiverse freshwater lake on earth.
