forbird-catching come early in the morning,when birds are most active and when theycome to the ground for food, drink, andnesting-materials. No one knows how many birds his cateats at night, although some cats bringmore or less of their game to the house.When the investigation was completed, aseries of questions was prepared and sentout to 1,500 persons. About 400 returnedthe blank well filled, and these repliesshowed that 125 species of birds killedby cats have been identified by the writers,but many were unidentified. The Robinheads the list, as it is reported by 272observers. The various Sparrows, Warb-lers and Thrushes come next; 75 reportthe Bluebird, 72 the English Sparrow, 52the Catbird, 46 the Song Sparrow, 42 theBarn Swallow, and 34 the Slate-coloredJunco. Thenumber of cats kept by families in theneighborhood are reported by 272 people.These statements show 1.4 cats perfamily. There are 331 who say that catsare allowed to roam at night.
