Description

Limestone with burrows in the Devonian of Ohio, USA.

This quarry near Toledo, Ohio targeted limestone for cement-making purposes. An interbedded limestone and shale unit of Middle Devonian age called the Silica Formation (also known as the Silica Shale) is the overburden at this site. The Silica Formation is richly fossiliferous with typical mid-Paleozoic marine invertebrates such as brachiopods, bryozoans, corals, crinoids, and trilobites.

The photo shows the underside of a limestone bed with abundant burrows, which are a common type of trace fossil. Burrowed sedimentary rocks are said to be bioturbated.
